EXTREME WAVE HEIGHTS OFF THE WESTERN COAST OF PORTUGAL

This paper contains a summary of all the work carried out during the course of research projects concerning the determination of the wave climatology of the Portuguese coast by using extreme sea wave values. Presented in the paper are local (nearshore) treatment methods, a specially developed method for transferring nearshore wave values to offshore, locally obtained extreme waves and the corresponding offshore values, and finally, a comparison between the obtained Northern regime (at Gigueira da Foz) and the Southern regime (at Sines).
