WHY SOME TANKERS SOMETIMES TILT AT TERMINALS

The intact stability of certain double hulls tankers can sometimes cause problems. Last year the US Coast Guard issued a safety alert after two incidents where double hull tankers became unstable during cargo operations. In April this year an had hoc panel was formed in the US to study the question of double hull tanker stability. This article outlines the causes of tilting or "lolling" of double hull tankers together with an update of the panel's findings and recommendations.
