The article outlines US Coast Guard (USCG) operations to ensure passenger safety in new designs. All cruise ships taking passengers from a port in the USA are inspected, as are all tankers and about 90% of other vessels. The USCG sees its job as ensuring that ships comply with the safety, construction and equipment requirements of SOLAS, as well as provisions of MARPOL 73/78 ILO 147, STCW and the Load Line Conventions.
