With offshore oil exploration continuing to move into deeper water beyond the scope of divers, the need for a new technology which will give ROVs the capability of matching or surpassing the performance of divers is becoming critical. These considerations prompted the launch of the EEC funded program Advanced Telerobotic System (ATES). ATES is a telerobotic system, integrated onto a Triton Advanced Work Class Vehicle, and designed to carry out a wide range of complex underwater tasks such as construction, platform node inspections and wellhead intervention without divers. It is envisaged that the system will by fully operational and available to the offshore industry by the end of the year.
