DESCRIPTION OF SCENARIOS IN SCENARIO BASED DESIGN - PROPOSAL OF METHODOLOGY AND RELATION TO ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA

Scenario based design is an approach for effective implementation of safety and environmental aspects to design. It is a general approach for all kinds of engineering. In this paper most examples relate to offshore platforms, but the method is equally adequate for shipbuilding, land based engineering or product development. Scenario based design builds on the principle that the safety and environmental aspects are part of the design basis. The respective discipline engineers should handle the aspects; like other design premises. The method is an alternative to the more traditional quantified risk analysis approach. Scenario based design is a method well suited to take advantage of the new trend of function oriented legislation and standards. The method is capable of transferring experience at the same time as it allows tailor made solutions. The method is especially attractive in combination with advanced calculation tools like computational fluid dynamics codes.
