CURRENT ISSUES IN WARSHIP PROCUREMENT

This paper takes the theme from the author's 1992 "The Management of Warship Design from the MOD Warship Project Manager's Perspective" and considers the constraints and drivers on warship procurement in the light of the substantial changes that have impacted on the defence environment, particularly since the collapse of the Warsaw Pact. The paper concludes with consideration of the warship designer's response to the many procurement issues. Tools and techniques are being produced to provide a more assured and earlier design definition. The underlying concern is seen as the ability to maintain a significant warship design capability nationally.
