DEVELOPMENT OF MAINTENANCE FREE COATING TECHNOLOGY

Elastic polyurethane (EPU) coatings were developed as heavy duty coatings which did not need to be repaired or reapplied for long periods. Successful results were obtained from experiments. An EPU coating needs an exclusive coating machine because of its rapid reaction and short pot-life. EPU coatings can be expected to have longer lasting anticorrosive effects than epoxy type coatings. These coating films are superior to other coating films with regard to physical properties of anti-impact, tension strength, anti-bending and adhesion because of the high elasticity. Because of the highly elastic film, organisms (ex barnacles) which attach themselves to the submarine structures can be removed easily and with no damage to the coating film.
