AN ANALYTICAL MODEL FOR BARGE COLLISIONS WITH RIGID STRUCTURES

An analytical model of barge collisions against rigid structures is detailed. This procedure allows the computation of design forces on structures such as guide walls for locks and bridge piers. The empirical structural interaction mechanism of Minorsky (1959) is used to account for energy absorbed in the barge structure through bending, crushing and tearing. Results from the analytical model are compared with direct time-domain solutions. This approach is contrasted with the berthing coefficients method detailed in the US Army Corps of Engineers design manual.
