Extensive research has been carried out on several wing in ground effect (WIG) craft concepts, including construction of large practical examples in a number of countries. So far they have not made major inroads into civilian passenger transport. This article is the first in a series examining some of the work done in this field, the scientific principles involved and the pros and cons of WIGS as a mode of transport.
