TRAFFIC GROWTH CONTAINS THE SEEDS OF FUTURE CHALLENGE

The strong upturn in Panama Canal traffic levels continues, the 1994 figures were the highest since 1982 and it is expected that 1995 will surpass that record. However, although new technology has changed the functioning structure of the canal, the waterway was not built to operate round-the-clock every day of the year and regular maintenance and repair works on ageing structures are increasingly straining transit expectations. US jurisdiction will end within five years and the article discusses future investment requirements.
