HIGH EFFICIENCY WARTSILA PROPELLERS FOR A NEW TANKER

The article describes the propulsion system on the chemical tanker BERGEN recently delivered from the Cing Fu shipyard in Taiwan to Fram Shipping. Each of the large and slow running CP propellers is driven by a Wartsila Vasa 6R32 engine through a two- stage gearbox. Efficient controls are provided by the propeller blades, which give an additional gain in efficiency of 1%. In order to reduce the profile drag of the propeller blades and thus increase the efficiency, the propellers are designed with very low blade areas. The expanded area ratio of 0.33 is extremely low for a tanker propeller.
