DESIGN, BUILD AND TRIAL OF 20M ULTRA FAST PATROL BOAT

This paper covers in some detail the design, build and trial of the 20m ultra fast patrol boat which is a GRP hull boat 20m length overall, 4.8m beam, 2.8m depth and 29 tons displacement. The boat has triple engines with controllable pitch propellers. In December 1994, the first of seven boats was delivered to the maritime police of Taiwan. With a maximum speed of 45 knots, it is the fastest high performance offshore patrol boat in Taiwan. Information is given on: performance requirement and design considerations; calm water resistance tests including the data of different displacements and LCG positions in the speed range of 25 to 45 knots; general description; material selection and structure design; design and consideration of the propulsion system; sea trial data; and rough sea operational capability.
