29.4-KNOT RO-RO FERRY FROM IHI FOR SHIN NIHONKAI
Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries (IHI) of Japan is building a pair of very fast full-displacement ferries, with a service speed of 29.4 knots for Japanese operator Shin Nihonkai. The fast speed has been specified to reduce the sailing time on the route between Otaru, on Hokkaido island, and Tsuruga on Honshu from the current 36 hours, using conventional ferries, to 19 hours. The 4900dwt ro/ro vessels are scheduled for delivery in May next year and each will be able to accommodate 515 passengers, 122 lorries and 81 cars. A completely new hull form has been produced for the new ferries, incorporating a slender design with a narrow beam of 25m to reduce wave resistance, as well as a large bulbous bow arrangement.
