CORROSION PROTECTION SYSTEM FOR LONG LIFE OF SHIPS' WATER BALLAST TANKS

In order to minimize the risk of essential failures and subsequent incidents or major renewals of hull structure during the ship's expected life span, it is very important to effectively protect the hull structure from corrosion. The authors have studied means of corrosion protection and investigated the actual conditions of ageing and the effects to coatings in water ballast tanks (WBT) for 22 ships aged 4 to 20 years, and have also carried out an experiment to accelerate corrosion, simulating the actual condition of a WBT. In this paper, the tendency of ageing deterioration of tar-epoxy coating in a WBT, causes coating deterioration in a short term, and a proposal for a WBT corrosion protection system is outlined. The corrosion protection system consists of a basic specification at construction, coating inspection, and maintenance after the ship is put into service. The system will ensure structural performance with high reliability appropriate to the expected life, and also contributes to avoid marine pollution.
