THE EFFECT OF CORROSION ON STRUCTURAL DETAIL DESIGN

The corrosion and fatigue mechanisms affecting ship structures with particular reference to bulk carriers and tankers are reviewed. Guidelines for corrosion and fatigue control by design are considered. A corrosion control strategy to minimise the potentially disastrous consequences of the interaction of localised corrosion and fatigue cracking is postulated, and the set of procedures to satisfy and apply the corrosion control strategy is reviewed.
