A COMBINED STEADY-STATE AND TRANSIENT APPROACH TO STUDY LARGE AMPLITUDE SHIP ROLLING MOTION AND CAPSIZING

An innovative technique to analyze the critical rolling motion of a ship in a seaway is described. It combines two previously described techniques into a single integrated one which allows the analyst to identify critical dynamical behaviour and then to study its consequences in great detail. The first step in the procedure is to determine the vessel steady-state behaviour using numerical continuation methods. The effect of vessel damping and righting arm are then investigated. Once a vessel configuration has been finalized, the critical wave amplitude and frequency condition is then determined and analyzed in detail using Poincare mapping techniques. This combined approach should be useful in developing rationally based ship stability criteria and guiding model tests and numerical simulation of critical vessel capsizing behaviour. Although random wave forcing is not specifically considered in the paper, the work could be useful in identifying critical peak spectral frequencies that should be avoided.
