HYDRODYNAMICS OF A BODY MOVING OVER A MUD LAYER - PART 1: WAVE RESISTANCE

The paper is focused on the evaluation of the wave resistance of a ship moving in a layer of clean frictionless water overlaying a mud layer. The Navier-Stokes equations, modelling the fluid med, and the corresponding boundary conditions are linearized. The ship surface is replaced by wave sources, and the potential of a unit source (Green function) moving in the water layer is derived. Numerical results are presented for a parabolic strut and for a body of revolution. It is demonstrated that the presence of a mud layer has a pronounced effect on the wave resistance in a certain range of densimetric Froude numbers.
