BULKER STRESSES RAISE CONCERNS

A six month research project into bulk carrier losses has revealed that during loading, the shear force at the transverse bulkhead of the overloaded compartment exceeds the in-port permissible shear force. Also, when finally loaded for sea, the shear force can exceed the at-sea permissible shear force. This shows the crucial importance of controlling the loading and discharging processes.
