The article describes a US Coast Guard waterways management assessment project which commenced in 1993. Its objective is to reduce risks associated with marine transportation, and to provide safe, efficient, effective and environmentally sound waterways. The project will attempt to define user requirements for Coast-Guard-provided navigational aids and waterway services, and assess delivery systems. The project is designed to develop the information base and management tools for improved waterways management by the US Coast Guard.
