AN OVERVIEW OF THE PORT SYSTEM IN TAIWAN

The island of Taiwan hosts a port system composed of long- established harbours (Keelung, Kaohsiung), an early 20th century introduction (Hualen) and creations of the 1970s (Taichung, Suao). This article pursues three themes. First, it describes the emergence of the ports. Secondly, it affirms the strong linkage between industrial policy and the growth of trade, especially exports, noting the indispensable role of ports in this process. Thirdly, it examines port performance.
