PROTOTYPE FLOOD PREVENTION DOORS FITTED ON BOARD WORLD'S LARGEST FERRY

A prototype main deck flood prevention door has been fitted to SILJA EUROPA, the world's largest passenger ferry. Being less than 1m wide when full opened, the flood prevention doors result in a minimum loss of cargo capacity. Initially, SILJA will gain operational experience with this prototype door, which, as it will be installed on the main deck portside only, will not, itself, be able to provide full watertight integrity. Following trials of the system, it is anticipated that the ferry will then be retrofitted with three more doors to seal off the main deck either side of the centre casing both forward and aft.
