FUEL QUALITY SAFETY TESTING

Bunker fuel analysis is of growing importance to shipping around the globe. The article reports on a fuel analysis service in Norway which tests some 3500 samples of marine bunker oils every year. As well as a comprehensive technical report on each sample, satisfactory or not, the shipowner and chief engineer on board receive advice specific to each vessel and its machinery. This advice enables the ship's crew to adjust the fuel pre-treatment plant, for example, and alerts them if the fuel's properties could lead to increased engine wear or equipment malfunction. In addition, statistical data on every sample analyzed over a given period is supplied to participating owners, enabling them to buy fuel from suppliers known to deliver consistently high quality in each port.
