TWIN-INPUT, SINGLE-OUTPUT FEARS FOR SUPERFREIGHTER FERRIES

The article describes the propulsion systems of two new ro/ro cargo ferries operating on the route between Rotterdam/Europort in Holland and Hull in the UK. The system consists of four New Sulzer Diesel ZA 40 S engines (bore 400 x stroke 560 mm). There are two eight-cylinder engines, each rated 5760 kW at 510 r/min. The eight- and nine-cylinder engines are arranged one after the other, in two separate machinery rooms to provide propulsion system redundancy. The propulsion system design provides for several modes of operation.
