Environmental legislation may eventually dictate the global use of tin-free antifoulings, but while a choice remains in most areas of the world, shipowners will favour tin-based systems offering longer term fouling control, hull smoothness and film integrity. No coatings company can yet promise a tin-free antifouling product delivering the same level of predictable five-year in-service performance as premium tin-containing self-polishing copolymer products. The article assesses the performance of some of the tin-free antifouling coatings currently available.
