PREDICTION OF ICE FORCES ON ARCTIC STRUCTURE MOLIKPAQ; COMPARISON BETWEEN MEASURED AND EXPERIMENTAL ICE FORCES

MOLIKPAQ is a steel mobile Arctic structure built at IHI in Japan, operating year round the Canadian Beaufort Sea. IHI conducted model experiments on MOLIKPAQ in an ice tank. A method called DuPTEM (Dual Parameters Testing and Estimating Method) was used to estimate ice forces on the structure. The DuPTEM was validated by the data acquired at MOLIKPAQ during the spring of 1986, where MOLIKPAQ experienced many interactions with various ice features in the Beaufort Sea. However, since the bending failure was predominant in the model experiments, the comparison was limited to the first year ice interactions, where the bending failure was predominant. The results of the comparison were promising, even though some extent of uncertainty was involved in both the measurements and the model experiments.
