A COLLISION AVOIDANCE EXPERT SYSTEM FOR INTEGRATED NAVIGATION SYSTEM AND ITS BRUSH-UP

To ensure highly automated and full safe ship operation it is desirable that an Integrated Navigation System (INS) has an intelligent decision-making supporting function. Such a function can propose a proper manoeuvring action to operators, the operators should decide the final action by their judgement supported by the other available supporting functions of the INS. To implement such a supporting function, the authors have developed a collision avoidance expert system for an INS. The paper describes the structure of the developed knowledge bases, the inference procedure, the brush-up of the developed knowledge bases using a ship handling simulator, and some simulation results. Some of the concepts and methods concerned with this knowledge based system, such as the classification of the target ships, the unblocking scope of the ship handing space and the prediction of plural actions of target ships, are proposed. It is concluded that the collision avoidance expert system developed possesses sophisticated problem solving ability for collision avoidance and it can provide an effective support for the operator's decision making.
