TRAINING AND THE NEED TO ADDRESS THE REQUIREMENTS OF ISM

Recent major incidents at sea have added further impetus to the argument that the shipping industry needs to regulate itself. The recognition of the need to introduce formal management systems to address the requirements of the International Maritime Organization, International Ship Management (ISM) Code, due to become mandatory in 1998, is, as a result, gathering pace. With this recognition comes the need for individuals who are responsible for developing and maintaining systems, to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to do so.
