A technical advice project on lifeboat release mechanisms was commissioned by the UK Marine Safety Agency in the light of a number of accidents, some fatal, which have occurred with 'on load' type lifeboat disengaging gears; and the concerns regarding the safety of such gears being expressed throughout the international maritime community. In this article, as well as explaining the circumstances which gave rise to the project, the various mechanisms available and the accidents which have occurred are detailed.
