DEEP DRAUGHT SPARS FOR WEST OF SHETLANDS

There are significant economic advantages to be gained by the use of spars for oil and gas development including: simple, low-cost construction; favourable motion characteristics combined with a tight watch circle; surface trees and steel risers that are shielded from waves and current to a depth of 650ft; insensitive to deck load and water depth; simple relocation; and oil storage facility in hull below hard tanks. The article discusses the application of spars for the west of Shetlands and other deepwater marginal areas.
