Previously equipped and trained primarily for convoy escort and anti- submarine warfare (ASW) in the North Atlantic, the new Canadian Maritime Command (MARCOM), with its modern general purpose frigates and supportive air defence ships, has proven itself to be ready, willing and able to deploy anywhere in the world. Moreover, it is prepared to undertake missions as diverse as fisheries patrol, diplomatic presence, embargo enforcement, open ocean ASW and support of land forces. The article discusses the role of MARCOM and reviews the fleet.
