DEVELOPING A COMPOSITE HULL FOR A LARGE HIGH SPEED CATAMARAN

The benefits of weight saving on high speed vessels are evaluated. Some of the most essential mechanical properties of steel, aluminium and composites, commonly used in shipbuilding are listed and an overall view of the different materials' potential is given. To evaluate the possibilities of composite materials a case study is presented. The chosen vessel is a 150m passenger/car catamaran ferry. Structural design, materials selection and testing, manufacturing technology, and vessel economy are discussed.
