STOCHASTIC STABILITY THEORY OF SHIP MOTION

This paper presents a method for the investigation of stability of ship motion stationary random processes and non-local stability of initial equilibrium position of a ship in wind and waves. Local and non-local stability criteria are also presented. Their connection with ship capsize and the generation of chaotic movement are considered. An example of the application of the proposed method on an investigation of nonlinear roll motion stability and capsizing is given. From this investigation, some fundamental mechanisms of ship capsize under the action of random wind-wave excitation are determined.
