BRITAIN'S FIRST NEW CANAL IN 90 YEARS

British Waterways, which runs the canals in Britain, recently opened a newly built 3 km stretch of the Aire & Calder Navigation, the first canal to be constructed in Britain since 1905. The article describes the construction of the canal which involved building a new lock which is 4.6m deep with a capacity of half a million gallons of water. In order to improve the fish habitat the new watercourse incorporates fish pipes which provide shelter for the fish, and embayments which are planted with reeds in order to allow growth of vegetation.
