In March 1993, the decision for 2 new main propulsion gear units for GTS FINNJET was made and the contract was given to a major German gear manufacturer. An extremely short construction period of 13 months for these approx. 100 tons weighting, complex marine gear units was adhered to according to schedule. The retrofit of the vessel was executed in April 1994 and within 3 weeks the existing gear units were dismounted and the completely mounted new gear units were installed, aligned, provided with tubes, connected electrically and tested. Dismounting and installation were effect via the car deck situated above the engine room. The ferry returned to service at the beginning of May 1994.
