AHEAD-LOOK SONARS: DESIGN COMPARISONS AND PERFORMANCE CONSIDERATION
Several types of ahead-look sonars (ALS) with a range of performance capabilities are commercially available. These sonars may be grouped into two general categories: electronically beam formed; and multiple pre-formed beam. These two design approaches are discussed, and their advantages and disadvantages in terms of cost, performance, and size analyzed. The suitability of the two designs to manned and unmanned vehicles is addressed. Impacts on ALS performance related to beam widths and beam side lobe levels are also examined, with emphasis on obstacle avoidance and shallow water detection scenarios.
