OIL BUNKERS, THE DUMPING GROUND FOR LAND WASTE

The disposal of environmentally embarrassing waste products, especially used automotive lubricating oil, into marine fuel oil can have adverse effects on the performance of a ships machinery. This has prompted the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to propose a regulation to be included in the forthcoming first revision of the ISO 8217 fuel specification. The IMO has requested that the revision should include an addition to the existing clause 4.1 which would state: 'The fuel should not include any added substance or chemical waste which either jeopardise the safety of the ship, adversely affect the performance of the machinery, be harmful to personnel, or contribute to additional air pollution'.
