NEW BUILDING TECHNIQUES EMPLOYED IN ABU DHABI LNG CARRIERS

The Turku yard of Kvaerner Masa-Yards is building four LNG carriers for the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company. The advanced tanker design will be able to transport 135 000m3 of LNG. The vessel is 289m in length, 48.1m in breadth and has a design draught of 11.3m. Furthermore, the 68 000dwt tanker can achieve a speed of 19.5 knots. The unique part of the design however, is the four Moss 40.44m dia spherical aluminium cargo tanks which, the designers say, simplify cargo systems and operation as well as reduce construction costs. Additionally, the slender hull form will have ramifications for fuel economy and seakeeping performance.
