ANALYSIS OF DESIGN LOAD IN SHIP SPECIFICATION

Using the nonlinear strip theory and taking two different types of ship as examples, several problems existing in the present ship specification, such as calculation of wave bending moments and slamming vibration bending moment, as well as the superposition of bending moments are discussed in detail. The paper indicates that the speed losses of ships in waves should be considered in the determination of design loads. The so called harmonic vibration wave need not be the most dangerous regular wave. It is not correct to calculate the bottom slamming of ships which have apparent flat bottoms according to the momentum slamming theory, and the total bending moment should not be obtained by simply adding the maximum values of wave bending moment to the slamming vibration bending moment.
