SPURIOUS DEFORMATIONS OF WAVES IN A LAYER OF FLUID IN NONUNIFORM FINITE DIFFERENCE MESHES
The paper deals with discrete solutions of the Helmholtz equation for a layer of fluid. In the considered cases of nonuniform grids with gradually changing mesh sizes and the finite difference method a deformation of the numerical solution occurs. The deformation assumes the form of a spurious wave reflected from the boundary where the mesh size change takes place. Moreover, the transmitted wave amplitude is changed. For the propagating dilational and surface waves the reflected wave amplitude and the change of the transmitted wave amplitude depend on the wave length. For the case of a standing wave the deformation of higher components of the wave is higher than the deformation of its lower components.
