THEORY AND EXPERIMENTAL VALIDATION OF A SURFACE PANEL METHOD FOR THE ANALYSIS OF CAVITATING PROPELLERS IN STEADY FLOW

In this paper the authors present the analytical formulation and the numerical implementation of a surface panel method for the analysis of the potential flow around a cavitating propeller. The method is the development of two existing programs that solved for the potential flow respectively around a non cavitating propeller and a partially cavitating two dimensional profile. As a first approach to the problem, the analysis was limited to the steady condition and attention was focused on the experimental validation of the method. The comparison between the calculation and the measurement carried out in a cavitation tunnel is promising and suggests the idea of the extension of the method to the most general case of a cavitating propeller working in a ship wake.
