PERMANENT-FIELD SYNCHRONOUS MOTOR FOR LOW NOISE SUBMARINE PROPULSION

Maximum reduction of the acoustical signature of a submarine is necessary in order to protect its safety and to enable it to locate other vessels using its own acoustical means. This article gives a short description of the acoustical properties of the propeller and of procedures for their improvement during propeller design and manufacture. It also considers the influence of rudder deflection and the gradient of the increase of the propeller rotational speed on hydroacoustical noise. The main subject of the article is the new technology of the propulsion motor whose properties have a favourable influence on the acoustical and other characteristics of the propulsion system. The new propulsion motor is a converter fed permanent-field polyphase synchronous motor. Continuous regulation of speed in the whole operating range, low-speed, high torque, direct transmission to the propeller shaft and low magnetic signature are provided. Microprocessor control ensures optimum power supply process, low-noise qualities, availability and diagnostics of the system.
