TREND OF VLCC STRUCTURES IN THE 21ST CENTURY

In March 1993 the International Maritime Organization (IMO) amended the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL 73/78) making double structures mandatory in VLCC construction. The amendments to the Convention and the various types of VLCCs which meet the requirements are introduced. Current trends and associated problems such as maintenance, monitoring, corrosion, sloshing and fatigue are discussed. The mid- deck structure and the double hull structure are compared. Future trends in VLCC construction are reviewed.
