SALT SPREADING MACHINES FOR HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE - IMPROVED METHODS FOR MODERN ROADS

Some of the historical background behind the development of the latest revision to BS1622 (Spreaders for Winter Maintenance of Roads) is described. The revised standard is said to include preferred modern techniques for keeping roads safe in winter. The DOE is said to be putting into service a number of prototype spreaders which meet the limited salt spreading rates of the new version of BS1622. It is stressed in the new standard that the corrosive effects of salt must be taken into account, therefore special measures are recommended to prevent corrosion damage to spreaders. /TRRL/
