The development in recent years of space-borne instruments for monitoring the Earth is leading to marked improvements in our knowledge of the oceans. This paper describes one such instrument, the radar altimeter. It explains how the altimeter measures significant wave height, and examines the accuracy and coverage obtained. Examples are given to illustrate how these measurements are being analyzed to extend our knowledge of global wave climate statistics.
