THE JOYSTICK: PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE
The author, master of the 55,451gt cruise ship STATENDAM, describes his experience of the relatively new joystick manoeuvring tool. To manoeuvre the vessel conventionally, the different units of machinery need to be controlled with six different levers. When using the joystick, the master can concentrate on the ship, ie radar, doppler, NACOS, ROT-indicator. Failure of one machinery unit is automatically compensated for by the joystick. Because of this, the use of the joystick lowers the incidence of human error while manoeuvring.
