The European Union Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) has been established with the aim of promoting the continuous improvement of good environmental practice and performance in industrial activities and local authority services. Participation in EMAS in voluntary for companies. EMAS requires that a company must have carried out an environmental review of the site and an environmental management system covering all site activities must be up and running. Additionally, the company must have a functioning environmental policy, as proof of commitment to effective environmental performance. The policy should result in a set of objectives aimed at achieving continuous improvement in environmental performance.
