PLANNING FOR SURVEYS - THE CLASSIFICATION SOCIETY'S VIEW
The paper discusses the key points of a ship repair survey procedure. With the present market conditions and the entry of several other organizations into the survey of vessels the concept of "life extension" may in future evolve into "enhanced surveys". Enhanced surveys are being studied by various owners' associations such as the Oil Companies International Marine Forum and international groups such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Classification societies are also studying the situation and have presented a set of recommendations to IMO. These recommendations are summarised at the end of the paper.
