VILLE DE VELA: CONTAINER SHIP FOR FRENCH CHARTER

Hyundai Heavy Industries Co Ltd of Korea, builders of VILLE DE VELA, claim that her container intake of 3,538TEU is the largest for vessels of comparable size. Two factors provide the basis for this claim, the first being her construction as a 'girderless' container vessel, a description resulting from the elimination of the centreline longitudinal upper deck strength member. Because of this, 11 container rows can be accommodated in the holds compared with 10 in competitive designs. Also, the length of the deckhouse, sited in the three-quarter aft position, has been minimised to increase the amount of deck stowage available. General arrangement drawings are included in the article.
