An entirely new cost-saving application of inflatable side- mounted airbags called Autosponsons has recently become a realistic SOLAS '90 conversion option for ro-ro ferry operators. A medium-sized vessel between 8-15,000 tons can be converted at a cost of around Pounds sterling 1m less than the alternative systems available. Because the system is modular it can be tailor-made to modify shortfalls in stability for any class of ship whether of one, two or three compartment design. As the majority of the internal conversion work can be done with the vessel still at sea, 'down time' is minimised. All the exterior work on the airbags and their containers is performed above the waterline eliminating the necessity for drydocking. There is no loss of cargo space and the entire system weighs between 105 and 150 tons.
