INVESTIGATION ON CAVITATION MECHANISM OF PROPELLER MATERIALS BY MEANS OF SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPE

The cavitation erosion process of alpha+beta brass was observed and studied by metallography, using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), an electron microprobe analyser (EMPA), and the ultrasonic magnetostrictive oscillator technique. A special morphology of damaged surface, concentric circles pattern, was observed on the cavitation damaged surfaces of the alpha+beta brass and a titanium alloy. On the basis of the experimental results, the microjet cavitation erosion mechanism and shock wave erosion mechanism are discussed.
